On January 14, 2020, the inaugural Nakuru Open County Schools Championships was set to kick off at Nakuru High School, with 25 schools participating in the event.
The participating schools, drawn from both within and outside Nakuru County, include national volleyball champions St Joseph's Kirandich, Moi Kabartonjo, Anestar School, Kunyak, Coulson Boys, Elburgon DEB, Menengai High, Nakuru Day, and Moi High School-Kabarak.
Other participating schools include Bahati Boys, Koelel, JM Kariuki, Njoro Boys, Baringo High, Kabimoi, Moi Secondary, Uhuru Kabiyet, Mema Secondary, Nakuru Boys, Nakuru Girls, Kelelwet, and Tumaini, among others.
The tournament aimed to prepare the schools for the forthcoming Inter-zonal schools championships, which would kick off the annual schools calendar of events.
Tournament coordinator Duncan Macharia stated that the schools would compete in both indoor and outdoor disciplines, with ballgames taking center stage among perennial rivals in different disciplines.
According to Macharia, the event was designed to assist the participating institutions in getting adequate preparations for the Inter Schools Championships, which were set to kick off in the next fortnight.
