On January 14, 2020, a remarkable story of determination unfolded in Migori county, where a Form One student from Pala Kojwanga primary school in Karachuonyo, Homabay county, joined Kanga High School.
Levis Otieno, a bright student who scored 391 marks in KCPE, reported to the school with an empty box and two bars of soap, a stark contrast to the usual school supplies.
His mother, Monica Atieno, had borrowed a small amount of money from a neighbor, which barely covered the cost of a metallic box and two bars of soap.
Speaking about his predicament, Levis said, 'The mother had only managed to borrow a small amount of money from a neighbor which was barely enough for a metallic box and two bars of soap.'
Kanga School Principal Michael Gweno confirmed that the student and his mother came to school a day earlier and were hosted in his house.
He added that they did not have a single coin for the due admission fee and only had the box and soap.
Thanks to the kindness of a form two student, Levis received his first pair of shoes, and the school has admitted him without school fees and learning materials, hoping that well-wishers would come to his aid.
