Four Important Things to Do While on Your Period

Published on January 14, 2020

Menstruation is a natural part of life for many women, but it can also be a challenging time. From bleeding and cramps to mood swings and weight gain, the symptoms of menstruation can be overwhelming. However, there are several things you can do to make this time of the month easier to manage.

First, prioritize your hygiene. Taking a shower twice a day can help prevent bacterial buildup and keep you feeling fresh and clean. Use an unscented, pH-balanced intimate cleanser to wash your lady area and avoid throwing off your pH levels.

Next, take care of your skin. During the menstrual cycle, hormones fluctuate, and many women experience breakouts on their face before or during their period. Give your skin some extra TLC by properly cleansing your face, applying a face mask, and slathering on sunscreen to prevent scars from getting darker.

It's also essential to level up your iron intake. When you bleed, you experience a dip in your iron levels, especially if you have a heavy flow. Load up on iron-rich foods like sukuma wiki, spinach, and fish, and consider treating yourself to dark chocolate, which is rich in iron and magnesium. Avoid excess salt and sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods, which can exacerbate symptoms.

Finally, exercise can help alleviate period symptoms. Exercising can improve your overall mood, reduce mood swings, and even decrease symptoms of dysmenorrhea, a condition characterized by painful periods. Try light cardio, low-volume strength training, or Pilates to boost your mood and make this time of the month more manageable.
