Heavy flooding in Nairobi's Mukuru slums has caused widespread disruption, with a local school forced to close its doors.
St Mary's Viwandani Secondary School in Mukuru-Kingstone slum was submerged in floodwater on Monday, leaving students and parents stranded.
"I travelled more than five kilometres from Embakasi to bring my daughter here after she received her admission letter but no one is here after closure of the school," said Mr Wilson Musinga, a parent affected by the closure.
Five other schools in the area, including St Elizabeth, Brightstar Academy, Brightstar Secondary, Little Friends, and Mukuru Community School, were also affected by the floods.
Over 100 households in Mukuru-Kaiyaba and Mukuru Kwa Reuben slums were displaced after the Ngong River burst its banks at around 11pm on Sunday, leaving residents without homes.
Road users were also unable to access the Kaiyaba-Hazina bridge due to the floods, while work on the Likoni road-Entreprise Road bypass came to a standstill due to the rainwater.
