Published on January 13, 2020, the Communications Authority announced plans to develop the National Addressing System (NAS), a KSh2 billion street name project, this year.
The project, which was conceptualized in 2016, aims to digitally assign names and numbers to streets, properties, and parcels of land, enhancing recognition and providing a much-needed boost to e-commerce.
According to the Communications Authority, the development of the street name project will span over a period of five years, with the goal of easing door-to-door services offered by online retailers, cab-hailing businesses, and hoteliers.
"We expect the project to commence this year after the government through the Ministry of Information Communications and Technologies (MOICT) gazetted a draft legislation that will operationalize and enable coordinated implementation countrywide initially through pilots in selected counties," stated the Communications Authority.
However, the project has faced delays in implementation owing to the unavailability of the KSh2 billion, with the Communications Authority seeking funding from the World Bank.
