On a chilly and rainy Monday morning, January 13, 2020, commuters in Kasarani were left stranded after matatu operators staged a strike, paralysing public transport in the area.
According to eyewitnesses, the matatu operators barricaded the Mwiki-Kasarani road at Sunton using stones and burning tires, forcing commuters, including school children, to walk for around 5 kilometres to Thika Road.
Photos taken by residents and shared on social media depicted the poor state of the road, with large potholes filled with water due to the morning rain.
The protesters attributed the traffic snarl-ups along the Mwiki-Kasarani route to the dilapidated road, which they claimed was impassable during rainy seasons due to its muddy state.
The incident highlighted the poor state of roads within Nairobi, with many residents expressing their frustration on social media.
