Anne Mwangi Mvurya, the University of Nairobi student leader who was with Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko when he was arrested in Voi, is now under investigation by secret state agencies for alleged drug and money laundering.

According to sources, Mvurya's bank accounts, cars, and her leadership of a network of university students allegedly hired by politicians are being probed.

The state has opened a special file on Mvurya to trace her movement and associates at the university and high circles.

Her flashy lifestyle and expensive campaign for the student leadership seat have raised eyebrows, with some fearing that student leaders at the University of Nairobi are funded by drug cartels in their campaigns and in return facilitate the sale of drugs to students.

Some student leaders allegedly allow drug barons to use their rooms and those of their friends to store narcotics, while others recruit students to sell drugs to their peers and lecturers.

Mvurya, a 21-year-old law student, became the first female chairperson of the University of Nairobi Student Association after winning the election with 24 votes against her opponent Samuel Ayoma's 16 votes.

She defended her campaign funds, stating that she sourced some from well-wishers, including fellow students, and that she is a businesswoman who sells produce from her mid-scale farm in Nakuru.

However, detectives want to know if these well-wishers include drug barons.

This is not the first time a University of Nairobi student leader has been linked to drugs. Embakasi East MP Babu Owino was previously accused of being a drug peddler during his days as a student leader at the University of Nairobi.
