When test driving a car, it's essential to be aware of potential issues that may arise. Start by ensuring the car has a valid license plate and insurance. Adjust the seat and mirrors to get familiar with the controls. As you drive, pay attention to any unusual noises, vibrations, or performance issues.
Some issues, such as noisy wheel bearings or drivetrain vibration, are more noticeable when driving on the highway. Suspension and steering noises are easier to detect when driving slow over rough roads. Look out for the following signs of potential problems:
- Long delay before the transmission engages when shifting from Park to Drive.
- Strong jolt or clunk when shifting from Drive to Reverse.
- Excessive engine vibration when idling in Drive.
- Hesitation or stumbling during acceleration.
- Irregular noises or vibration on acceleration or deceleration.
- Clicking or popping noise when accelerating in turns.
- Transmission shifting smoothly on acceleration and deceleration.
- Jolts, slipping, or delays when transmission shifts from one gear to another.
- Jolts when coming to a stop.
- Engine idling smoothly or rpms jumping up and down.
- Car holding a straight line well or pulling to one side.
- Steering wheel centered when driving straight.
- Knocking, thumping, or rattling noises when driving on rough roads.
- Car bouncing excessively when driving over bumps.
- Noises while braking.
- Car pulling aside during braking.
- Brake pedal feeling too low or too hard.
- Hand brake holding the car from rolling on the incline.
- Car feeling stable or drifting to one side.
- Vibration at higher speeds.
- Humming or rumbling noises.
- Whining or noises when accelerating or decelerating.
- Steering wheel shaking during braking.
After the test drive, consider test driving another car of the same model to compare. Discuss any issues that need to be addressed before signing the contract. It's also essential to have the vehicle inspected by a mechanic of your choice before buying it.
