January 13, 2020, was a time when women proudly declared themselves part of the #teamnosleep crew, with 3 am being an active time on social media.

However, I soon realized that this solidarity came with a cost: lack of sleep made me grumpy and unproductive, and my mental health suffered.

For many of us, it's not that we lack sleep, but rather that our brains refuse to shut off, making it impossible to fall asleep.

According to health.com, here are five ways to help you switch off your brain and fall asleep within minutes of hitting the pillow:

  1. Write down your thoughts

Before bed, make a to-do list for the next day, and jot down any long-term plans or ideas you have. This helps to 'empty' your brain, giving it time to slow down and sleep.

  1. Get out of bed

If you've been lying in bed for an hour or more with no sleep in sight, get up and do something else. Your mind will associate your bed with no sleep if you force yourself to lie there when you're not sleepy.

  1. Eat something light

Sometimes, hunger can keep us awake. Instead of a full meal or junk food, try eating something light but filling, like a small portion of popcorn or an apple. Avoid sugary foods that can keep you awake.

  1. Use a sleeping aid

Be it a sleep meditation, soothing music, or ambient noise, these tools can help distract your brain and lull you to sleep.

  1. Stay up longer

Instead of forcing yourself to sleep when you're not tired, try going to bed later and getting enough sleep. Also, make sure to tire yourself out both physically and mentally before bed, so you don't struggle to fall asleep.
