January 13, 2020, marked a significant milestone for Stella 'STL' Yamumo, a fast-rising TV and radio presenter, voice-over artiste, emcee, community worker, vlogger, and blogger.
With a diverse portfolio that includes co-hosting 'Talanta Mtaani' TV show and 'Tuchapiane' show on Mtaani Radio, a community-based radio in Dagoretti South, STL has proven that with determination and hard work, anything is possible.
Speaking to People Daily, STL shared her journey, which has been nothing short of remarkable. 'It's all through God's grace, desire to be successful backed by faith and gratitude,' she said. 'But I don't think it's huge yet. I have so much I want to achieve…this is just the beginning.'
For STL, doing different things has helped to spread the risks, as sometimes media work can be challenging. Her love for radio, however, has been a constant source of inspiration. 'Radio has always been my first love,' she said. 'I love to talk, but on the inside I'm a bit shy and laidback and thought radio would be a perfect match as no one would get to see me.'
TV, however, came calling in 2017, when STL was trying to get some decent income, as radio wasn't paying well. Since then, she has been a regular fixture on Kenyan screens, hosting 'Talanta Mtaani' TV show, which has made her realize that 'you can achieve whatever you set your mind to.'
As a community worker, STL has also been involved in a three-year campaign on children's rights, funded by the Italian government department of Foreign Affairs in partnership with Koinonia Community. The campaign aimed to highlight the importance of upholding children's rights and sensitized the community through various activities.
Looking to the future, STL's aspirations are ambitious. 'I want to get on mainstream radio and host more TV shows on a larger scale,' she said. 'The sky is the lower limit.'
