On January 12, 2020, Trade Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya addressed concerns from farmers in the milk and coffee industries, assuring them that the government was working to stabilize the sectors.
Speaking at a burial in Meru, CS Munya acknowledged the challenges faced by farmers, including poor milk prices and the presence of counterfeit milk products.
"The issues are not under my docket, but we are in the same government, so I have to answer on behalf of the national government. The milk problem is going to be resolved soon," he said.
CS Munya also raised concerns about the quality of milk products, particularly the Lato brand, which he claimed was artificially produced by adding water to milk powder.
He noted that police had confiscated 23.1 tonnes of milk from a distribution depot in Meru County, citing it as substandard.
However, the depot manager, Pritpal Bhamraave, disputed the claim, stating that they had all the required documents, including the East Africa Community certificate of origin.
Regarding the coffee industry, CS Munya announced that his ministry had released Sh2 billion to boost the sector, with farmers set to receive 40 per cent of the value of the coffee they deliver.
