On Sunday, January 12, 2020, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and police officers from Kamukunji Police Station made a significant breakthrough in the fight against mobile phone theft in Nairobi.
Following a tip-off from members of the public, the detectives raided a shop in Muoroto, along Jogoo Road, belonging to mobile phone dealers. The raid resulted in the recovery of 515 assorted mobile phones believed to be stolen.
Three people were arrested during the raid after they failed to provide a proper account of all the phones in their possession. The trio will be arraigned in court on Monday and are currently being held at Kamukunji Police Station.
According to the DCI, the three suspects will be charged with having in their possession suspected stolen property contrary to Section 323 of the Penal Code. The recovered items will be presented as exhibit in court.
It's worth noting that this is not the first time police have recovered stolen mobile phones in Nairobi. In December, five suspects were arrested and 151 smartphones were recovered. In October, police in Nairobi recovered over 260 mobile phones stolen in armed robberies and muggings in the CBD and Kayole estate.
