January 12, 2020 - A locust invasion has hit Samburu County, with the Ministry of Agriculture under Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri being urged to take action to prevent the spread of the pests.
Speaking at the launch of a secondary school bursary program in Maralal Town, Samburu Central Sub County, Samburu County Women Representative Maison Leshoomo expressed concerns that the government is not doing enough to prevent the locusts from spreading from Ethiopia through Garrisa, Meru, Isiolo, and now Samburu.
The locusts are reportedly destroying grass and tree leaves completely, posing a danger to the lives of livestock in the county.
Leshoomo claimed that she had called Kiunjuri to intervene, but he instead asked her to monitor the locusts until they settle at night.
The locust invasion has been reported in Ngurnit area in Samburu North and Archers post in Samburu East sub-counties.
Nodoto Ward MCA Raisy Letura, whose area has been affected by the insects, blamed the national government for being reluctant to address the problem of locusts spreading across the country.
