Published on January 12, 2020, a new initiative seeks to protect landlords from tenants who default on rent payments.

Developed by Rent Bureau Director Daniel Wachira, the online platform, dubbed 'Rent Bureau', aims to ensure that once a tenant vacates a house, their account indicates whether they have cleared their rent.

According to Wachira, the platform will target any tenant who pays rent above Sh2,000 for listing in case they default.

Harold Ayodo, an advocate of the High Court, notes that currently, the legal agreement between a tenant and landlord is what can be used to sue a tenant in case he or she defaults.

However, Wachira's innovation seeks to provide an additional layer of protection for landlords by allowing them to list their tenants and track their payment history.

Jeremiah Kariuki, a landlord in Eastlands, Nairobi, welcomes the idea, stating that it is the best way for tenants to uphold their obligations.
