On January 8, 2020, Deputy President William Ruto arrived in Mombasa for an official visit, expecting to stay at the newly refurbished former Coast Provincial Commissioner's residence.
However, upon his return to the residence at 4 PM, he found his personal belongings being removed by the employees. A senior government official had allegedly ordered the removal of his belongings, leaving Ruto confused.
According to a source, Ruto's personal clothes and other belongings had been placed in the rooms in the morning, only to be removed later that day. The source described the situation as a 'shocker!'
As a result, Ruto had to spend the night at the English Point Marina in Nyali and traveled to Nairobi the next day.
When reached for comment, Ruto's press secretary, Emmanuel Talam, stated that the DP's residence was complete and ready to be occupied, but did not confirm whether Ruto was kicked out.
Government spokespersons Cyrus Oguna and Kanze Dena refused to comment on the matter, directing journalists to the DP's office.
This incident is not the first time Ruto has been left embarrassed by Statehouse operatives. On November 27, 2019, he was locked out of a meeting between President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga during the launch of the BBI Report at Bomas.
