Chaotic scenes erupted at the Kilimani Police Station in Nairobi on Friday night as a group of lawmakers, led by Kandara MP Alice Wahome, stormed the facility demanding the release of Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria.
Kuria, who was arrested earlier in the day on assault charges, had been granted a Sh 50,000 cash bail by Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot.
However, the police refused to release Kuria, prompting the lawmakers to clash with the authorities. The situation escalated, with the police lobbing teargas at the agitated lawmakers.
The lawmakers, who included Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungw'a, Nyali MP Mohammed Ali, and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, accused the state machinery of frustrating Kuria and other MPs who have been vocal critics of the government.
"I questioned him for using slur language during a meeting, right in the presence of children. Instead of defending himself, he rose from his seat and punched me hard that I fell," alleged victim Joyce Wanja said in a recorded video.
