Published on January 11, 2020, the US sent top officials to assess the situation at Manda Bay, Lamu, after a deadly Al-Shabaab attack that killed three American soldiers and injured two US Department of Defence members.

The officials, led by US Africa Command (AFRICOM) Commander US Army Gen Stephen Townsend, were sent to hear directly from troops and commanders on the ground about the details of the attack.

AFRICOM's command team, which included US Army Major General Michael Turello, US Air Force Brigadier General Leonard Kosinski, and other senior leaders, visited Camp Simba base on Thursday to investigate the attack.

US service members from AFRICOM's East Africa Response Force were also deployed to secure the airfield and augment security, with around 50 to 100 troops arriving at the Manda Bay Airfield on Sunday.

Gen Townsend stated that the US remained unbowed despite the attack, with the officials working to assess the situation and provide support to the affected troops.
