Published on January 11, 2020, the government has embarked on a project to construct four more waterfronts along various water bodies to boost tourism numbers.
Two months after the construction of the Mama Ngina waterfront in Mombasa County, the government has allocated funds for the projects.
According to Tourism CS Najib Balala, Mombasa will have an additional waterfront, while the rest will be constructed in Malindi, Naivasha, and Kisumu.
The Naivasha waterfront will be built on land owned by the Kenya Wildlife Service, bordering Lake Naivasha.
However, stakeholders and environmental experts have expressed concerns over the planned construction of a Sh300m waterfront in Lake Naivasha, citing the need for an environmental impact assessment to avoid negative effects.
CS Balala assured that the government is working closely with other departments to ensure the waterfronts are constructed on time and that security measures are in place to ensure the safety of visitors at Hellsgate National Park.
