On January 10, 2020, Manchester Magistrates' Court handed down a five-year ban to a Manchester City fan for racially abusing England forward Raheem Sterling.

The fan, Ian Baldry, 58, made a racist remark after Sterling scored against Bournemouth in a Premier League match in December 2018.

Baldry pleaded guilty to the offense and was also ordered to carry out 200 hours of community service.

Although Sterling did not hear the comment at the time, it was heard by a number of supporters.
