On January 10, 2020, Raila Odinga addressed a crowd at the Gusii Stadium in Kisii County during a Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) consultative meeting.
Responding to a section of the crowd who asked him to address Miguna's travel woes, Raila stated that neither he nor President Uhuru Kenyatta was preventing Miguna from coming back to Kenya.
According to Raila, Miguna was a 'small person' who was not a threat to anyone, and the Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang'i, would handle the matter of Miguna's return.
Raila emphasized that Kenya was a free country, and that nobody was ready to give Miguna unnecessary mileage, maintaining that he would be back in the country as long as he abided by international travelling requirements.
Earlier, Miguna had declined the government's offer to visit a Kenyan embassy across the world to get a passport, citing concerns that it might be a trap to eliminate him, referencing the case of Saudi Arabia Journalist Mohammed Khashoggi.
