Published on January 10, 2020, a Manchester City supporter has been handed a five-year ban from football matches after racially abusing Raheem Sterling.

The incident occurred in December 2018 at the Etihad Stadium during a Premier League game against Bournemouth, where Sterling scored a goal.

Ian Baldry, 58, from Bradford, West Yorkshire, pleaded guilty in September to causing racially aggravated intentional harassment, alarm or distress.

At Manchester Magistrates' Court, Baldry was sentenced to a five-year ban from football matches, 200 hours of community service, and £170 in court costs.

Witnesses described the racist comment as 'disgusting' and 'shocking', with one stating, "I was shocked and offended and felt sick to my stomach when I heard it."

The ban comes amid a growing trend of footballers being racially abused by fans, with several high-profile incidents in recent seasons.
