As we begin a new year, it's essential to recognize the importance of rest in our lives. While staying active is healthy, taking time off to rest is just as crucial for our physical and mental well-being. In fact, many of us only take time to rest when we're suffering from burnout or when our bodies are crying out for it.
Published on January 10, 2020, by Leah Kabindu, this article highlights the seven reasons why you should take a break after a busy day.
Refueling Your Energy Levels ¶
Constantly keeping busy depletes our energy levels, leaving us fatigued and less inclined to put our best foot forward. When we're tired and stressed, we can't expect to hit the same productivity levels as when we're well-rested and stress-free.
Preventing Burnout ¶
Burnout is a syndrome linked to chronic work stress, and it's more likely to occur when we're worn out physically, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. When we experience burnout, we become less productive at work and in our day-to-day activities.
Reconnecting with Friends and Family ¶
Human beings are social beings, and we require relationships to maintain a stress-free and happy emotional lifestyle. Social relationships have been known to refuel, re-energize, and boost our emotional and mental states.
Increasing Life Span ¶
Rest improves our health by lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart disease, which in turn increases our lifespan.
A Healthier You Means Less Sick Days ¶
Rest obtained during leisure time and during vacation encourages a more positive mindset and decreases chances of succumbing to fatigue and burnout. Workplace performance also improves after a period of relaxation and recovery.
Slowing Down the Aging Process ¶
Sleep can delay aging, and a tired person usually looks older than they actually are. On the other hand, someone who is stress-free and relaxed looks younger and more vibrant.
Helping in Weight Management ¶
Achieving our ideal weight requires more than following a restrictive diet, eating healthy, and exercising regularly. Rest is essential in helping us achieve our ideal weight.
