On January 10, 2020, Kasipul MP Ong'ondo Were presented commitment letters to 300 students who excelled in the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in Kasipul constituency.
The students, 150 girls and 150 boys, were each awarded Sh10,000 for their exemplary performance in the exam, which was conducted in both public and private primary schools.
Speaking in Oyugis town, MP Were stated that the Constituency Development Fund (NGCDF) was preparing a Sh3 million cheque for the group, which would be used to pay school fees for the students joining Form One in national and extra county schools.
According to the MP, the programme aimed to motivate pupils to work hard in their studies and enhance competition among them, ultimately improving academic performance in the constituency.
Were emphasized that the special bursary would not affect the normal bursary for needy students in the constituency, and that arrangements were already in place to distribute bursary cheques to 3000 needy students before the end of the month.
Parents expressed optimism that the initiative would reduce the burden of paying school fees, with one parent, John Obunga, stating, 'As a parent, I feel relieved because Sh10,000 is not easy to get. I urge pupils to work hard in their studies to enable become successful in life.'
