On January 10, 2020, Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia appointed Philip Jamuhuri Mainga as the new managing director of Kenya Railways Corporation for a period of three years.

Mainga takes over from Atanas Maina, who was suspended from office on corruption allegations.

Mainga's appointment comes at a time when the corporation is working to revamp old railway lines across the country.

His major task will be to improve services on the Madaraka Express, which plies the Nairobi-Mombasa route.

Mainga was previously the business research and general manager at KRC before taking up the position of managing director in an acting capacity in 2018.

Under the new management structure, several other appointments have been made, including David Njogu as general manager for legal services and Edwin Njeru as GM for internal audit and research.

Other appointments include Peter Kamakia as accounts manager, John Maina as GM for planning, design and environment, and Francis Wanjohi as real estate valuation and agency manager.

Job Otiwa has been appointed as head of strategy and economic planning, while Mark Murkomen is the new security services manager.

Train services will be managed by Erick Kamwenwa, and Rebecca Owour has taken over as ICT manager. Everlyne Ngari will serve as the administration manager.

As part of the changes, over 110 junior staff have been promoted to enhance staff motivation and morale, according to Maj-Gen Awita in a previous interview.
