On January 10, 2020, a public funeral was held for the mother of Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua, where a significant donation was made.

Kieni MP Kanini Kega was present at the funeral and delivered a Sh500,000 donation on behalf of President Uhuru Kenyatta, which included Sh100,000 from his own pocket.

However, the donation sparked a public disagreement between Kanini Kega and Deputy President William Ruto, who was also in attendance.

DP Ruto expressed his displeasure with Kanini Kega's actions, stating, "You all know that there is only one person in Kenya who was sworn in to deputise the President. And I will do that very diligently. Everybody should do their job. Let us respect each other."

He further added, "If you are working in a hospital do that. If you are a watchman or MCA do your job. Let us respect each other."

Speaking to reporters, Kanini Kega expressed his shock at DP Ruto's harsh reaction, saying, "I was shocked. The President talks to many people. I am an elected leader and his (Uhuru's) friend. In fact, I should be congratulated that I delivered the money."

He questioned why he was chastised, given that he had delivered the donation as instructed, and wondered if DP Ruto was not the one who was bereaved, as he had given the money to the family of the deceased.
