On January 9, 2020, a disturbing incident occurred at Migori Stadium, where a 'Nation' journalist was physically attacked by Governor Okoth Obado's aide and her supporters.
The journalist, Ian Byron, was covering the launch of a scholarship programme when he was confronted by Lisa Wema, the governor's aide, and two men.
According to eyewitnesses, the trio accused 'Nation' of giving Governor Obado bad press and demanded that Byron leave the function or face further consequences.
However, they failed to explain the nature of the negative publicity they claimed the media outlet was giving the governor.
Deputy Communication Officer Otieno Sije distanced the governor from the attack, stating that he would address the matter later.
Kenya Union of Journalists Secretary General Eric Oduor, Kenya Correspondents Association Chairman Oloo Janak, and Migori Journalists Association Chairman George Juma condemned the attack and called for an urgent investigation.
