On January 9, 2020, the Nairobi County Assembly granted the Nairobi Regeneration Committee the power to manage county affairs, amidst a leadership crisis.
The decision was made during a special sitting, where Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) resolved to have the regeneration committee spearhead development in the county.
The move comes after Governor Mike Sonko, who is facing graft charges, was barred from office by a court order.
Speaker Beatrice Elachi convened the meeting at the County headquarters to address the leadership situation in the county.
During the meeting, the speaker warned MCAs against spreading false information that some suspended county officials were bribing MCAs to be reinstated.
The speaker also directed that pending bills, especially those of special groups, be settled before the house resumes in February.
However, the MCAs steered clear of debating the nomination of a Deputy Governor by Governor Mike Sonko, who was blocked from his duties due to the court order.
