On January 9, 2020, a disturbing incident unfolded at the Migori Stadium, where a journalist from the Nation was covering Governor Okoth Obado's scholarship programme launch.

According to eyewitnesses, the journalist, Ian Byron, was confronted by Governor Obado's aide, Lisa Wema, and two men, who allegedly accused the Nation of giving the governor bad press.

The trio demanded that Byron leave the function or 'face something worse', but failed to explain the negative publicity they claimed the media outlet was giving Obado.

Byron reported the incident to the police, who were called to the scene after he was hit with a bottle of soda in the head.

Deputy Communication Officer Otieno Sije distanced the governor from the attack, stating that he would address the matter later.

The Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ), Kenya Correspondents Association (KCA), and Migori Journalists Association condemned the attack, calling for an urgent investigation into the incident.
