January 9, 2020, marked a significant day for Kaizer Chiefs as they celebrated their 50th anniversary at the FNB Stadium. The festivities were attended by club chairman Kaizer Motaung, who hinted at the possibility of a new signing in the near future.

"As you know it's another window period, and obviously there might be an opportunity for us to acquire one position. If it succeeds, it will happen in the next two weeks or so," Motaung told TimesLive during the celebrations.

Unbeknownst to the fans, Anthony Akumu, a former Gor Mahia midfielder, was in attendance, watching Kaizer Chiefs thump Highlands Park 3-0 from the stands. Akumu's presence has sparked speculation about his potential move to the South African top-tier side.

The Kenyan international is a free agent after his contract with Zambian giants Zesco United lapsed in December. According to media reports in South Africa, Akumu has agreed terms with Kaizer Chiefs, with all that remains is the paperwork.

Leading South African football portal Soccer Laduma reports that the team has parted ways with former Simba SC midfielder James Kotei to create space for Akumu, further fueling the speculation.
