January 9, 2020, marked a significant development in Kenya's tea trade as the country prepares to send its third tea trade mission to Iran in the last four years.

The mission, set to take place next month, aims to solidify Kenya's position in the Iranian market, which has been threatened by US sanctions.

According to Anthony Muriithi, the director general of Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA), the Kenyan delegation will head to Iran to promote the country's tea exports and retain the premium price paid by Iranian buyers.

Iran remains one of Kenya's key markets, and the demand for tea in the country remains high, with the country paying a premium price for local tea.

"Iran remains one of our key markets and the demand for the beverage is still high in that country," said Mr Muriithi.

Kenya has sent several trade missions to Iran in the past, including one in 2017 and another last November, in a bid to promote the country's tea exports and retain the market share.
