On January 9, 2020, a tragic incident occurred in Mombasa, where a 16-year-old class six pupil from Amani Primary School took her own life.
The pupil, Rehema Sidi, had been asked by her school to repeat class six, a decision that her parents and she did not agree with.
According to her report form, Rehema had scored 207 out of 500 marks, an improvement from her first and second term tests where she scored 176 and 191 respectively.
Her class teacher had recommended that she repeat, citing below-average marks.
However, Rehema's mother, Sada Ngada Mwazuma, stated that her daughter had confided in her about wanting to change schools due to the repeat recommendation.
The school's headteacher, Abdalla Ali, claimed that they were investigating the issue, but the school remained tight-lipped about asking Rehema to repeat.
Contradictory information was given by the school and the parents regarding Rehema's attendance at school, with the headteacher stating that she had not shown up since the opening day.
