On January 7, 2020, Daniel Njonjo Mwangi was arrested on Kimathi Street for allegedly being in possession of a rungu and a knife, which indicated he was about to commit a robbery.

At the Milimani Law Courts, Magistrate Caroline Nzimbe read the charges to Njonjo, who responded by shouting, 'Afadhali nikufe, sina pesa na siendi mahali (I would rather die, I don’t have money and I’m going nowhere)'.

Despite being granted Sh30,000 cash bail and an alternative bond of Sh50,000, Njonjo continued to protest, claiming he had a sick mother and children in school, and couldn't afford the bail. He even head-butted a policeman who tried to handcuff him.

The magistrate was forced to adjourn the session to allow the police to take the accused away. The case will be heard on January 27, 2020.
