Published on January 9, 2020, Kenyan youngsters registered mixed results on Wednesday in the East African Tennis Championships at the Gymkhana Club in Dar es Salaam.
Kenya's tennis players had dominated the previous year's event, winning all categories except the boys' 14 and under category.
Raymond Oduor secured a win for Kenya in the boys under 16 category, beating Eritrea's Uqbay Awet in straight sets of 6-2, 6-2. However, compatriot Edmond Ogega fell to Burundian opponent Gatoto Akbar in the boys under 16 semi-finals category, losing 6-7(7), 6-4.
Brandon Isami secured the second win for Kenya in the Under 16 boys individual category after beating Mohammed Antoissi of Comoros 6-1, 6-0.
Kenya's Ruincliffe Ominde beat teammate Liberty Baraka 6-2, 1-6, 10-7 in the boys under 14 category, while Wechuli Gilbert lost to Tanzania's Ndossi Isaka 6-4, 7-6(5).
Kenya's Melissa Mwakha beat Singo Naitoti of Tanzania 6-3, 6-2 in the girls' Under 14 category, while Urasa Faith lost to Rwanda's Nashimwe Corine 6-0, 6-4. Oresha Mercyline also lost to Rwanda's Tuyishima Rama 6-0, 6-4.
Angela Okutoyi secured a win for Kenya in the girls under 16 category, beating Arielle Horprestch of the Seychelles. However, Roselida Aumwa lost to Alicia Owegi of Kenya 6-3, 7-6(1).
Kenya's Ruinclife Ominde and Liberty Baraka outclassed Tanzania's Ndosi Isaka and Ramadhan Rashidi 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 in the boys' 14 and under doubles category.
