As the 2019/2020 academic year begins, over 114,000 students in Kenya's universities and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) colleges are at risk of missing out on Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans.
According to HELB CEO Charles Ringera, if the target of Sh. 4.9 billion is not achieved, a third of the 370,000 students will not receive loans for the remaining part of the academic year.
As a result, a number of students are likely to drop out during the academic year that ends in June, as reported by the Business Daily on January 9, 2020.
HELB missed its half-year collections target by around Sh. 100 million, collecting Sh. 2.2 billion against a target of Sh. 2.3 billion. The agency is also struggling to recover Sh. 7.7 billion from 78,328 loan defaulters.
