On January 8, 2020, Mozambique authorities detained six opposition members in connection with violent attacks in the central regions, with at least 21 people killed since August 2019.

The group, which includes a member of the Renamo municipal assembly and the head of the Marromeu Youth wing, was arrested on its way to Nhamatanda district, the alleged scene of attacks.

One of the group's members is hospitalized after being shot in the operation, while the other five are being held at Sofala's police station.

The group denies any link to the attacks, which police attribute to members of Renamo's armed wing.

Meanwhile, Renamo's armed wing member, André Matsangaíssa Júnior, threatened to carry out more attacks in the central regions unless kidnapped members of his family are freed.

Mr. Júnior claimed that the kidnappers, who he believes are security and defense forces of Mozambique, are demanding a $2 million ransom and his surrender to authorities.

He stated, 'I don't have this money to pay and I will not surrender any time soon,' and threatened attacks when schools reopen in February unless his relatives are freed.

Earlier, Renamo's armed group leader, Mariano Nhongo, had threatened attacks next week if opposition legislators agreed to take oath of office with President Filipe Nyusi following the October 15, 2019 elections.
