Published on January 9, 2020, the Tokyo Olympics qualifiers have seen Kenya's 'Malkia Strikers' volleyball team make significant strides towards securing a spot at the Summer Games.
On Tuesday night, Kenya edged Cameroon 3-2 (25-16, 23-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-11) at the Tokyo Olympics qualifiers, taking their tally to eight points.
With one more match to play against Nigeria, who are currently at the bottom without a point, Kenya is on the cusp of returning to the Olympics after a 16-year hiatus.
Francis Mutuku, the acting Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K), expressed confidence in the team's abilities, stating, 'As I said before, NOC-K has been preparing for the Olympics with volleyball firmly in the picture. These girls showed the true Olympic spirit against Cameroon and that kind of display deserves a place in the Olympics.'
Team manager Mududa Waweru also expressed gratitude towards NOC-K for their support, saying, 'We are grateful to NOC-K because they have treated these girls like the queens they are. It means a lot to have a NOC-K official travel with the team and ensure their stay here was well taken care of.'
