On January 8, 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, made a historic announcement about their future roles within the British royal family. The couple stated that they would continue to support Queen Elizabeth II, but would be stepping back from their official royal duties.

Their decision was motivated by a desire to give their 8-month-old son, Archie, 'geographic balance' in his upbringing. The couple plans to spend part of the year outside of Britain, allowing their family to 'focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.'

While the couple did not specify their exact plans, royal watchers believe they will likely choose to live in Canada, given their previous connections to the country. The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, lived in Toronto for several years while filming her television series, 'Suits.'

Prince Harry's official duties often take him to the Commonwealth, of which Canada is a member. The Queen is also the Queen of Canada, making the couple's decision somewhat logical.

However, many questions remain unanswered, including how the couple will support themselves financially. Their charitable work does not generate income, and they have a 'pretty extravagant lifestyle.'

Wednesday's announcement was described as 'unprecedented' by royal watchers, but not entirely surprising given the rising tensions within the family. The couple's decision not to spend Christmas with the Queen and other family members at Sandringham was seen as a 'road test' for their separation from the family.
