On January 8, 2020, a tense standoff occurred at Kiobegi Secondary School in Nyamache when police clashed with demonstrators seeking to oust the school's principal, Jairus Onchoke.

The protesters, led by Davidson Onuso, the deputy Speaker, alleged poor management of the institution and sought to evict the principal.

Police responded by firing tear gas and beating protesters with clubs, leading to the arrest of Onuso outside the school compound.

Onuso had been arrested earlier on Tuesday evening in Nyamache and released on a police bond.
