On January 1, 2020, Andrew Otieno, the former CEO of the defunct Kenya Sugar Board, passed away in Arusha, Tanzania, while on a business trip. His body was later buried in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, against the wishes of his Kenyan family.

According to George Otieno, Andrew's brother, the family was shocked to learn that Andrew had already been buried, even as they made arrangements to lay him to rest at his home in Ndhiwa, Homa Bay County. "It came as a shock but the truth is that Andrew has been buried in Tanzania against our wishes," George said.

Andrew Otieno had worked and lived in Dar-es-Salaam after quitting the KSB in 2007. He was a chemical engineer and ran the Crest Group of Companies in Tanzania, where he majored in consultancies.

A postmortem report showed that Andrew's death was caused by breathing problems and multiple organ failure.
