Published on January 8, 2020, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been backed by the Council of Governors in his move to nominate a deputy governor, despite being barred from office by a court.

The Council of Governors acknowledged Sonko's nomination of Ann Kananu Mwenda as Nairobi's deputy governor, citing Article 180(5) of the Constitution, which states that a County Governor shall nominate a person qualified for nomination as a candidate for deputy governor.

Chairman of the Council of Governors, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, said, 'We are glad that the governor Sonko has exercised his constitutional mandate as the head of Nairobi County.'

The governors urged the Nairobi County Assembly to vet the nominee in accordance with their mandate, as enshrined in the law.

Sonko nominated Mwenda on Monday, citing the need for a deputy to aid in the smooth running of county operations following his bar from accessing his office due to corruption charges.

However, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Noordin Haji, faulted Sonko, stating that bail terms do not allow him to perform executive duties like appointing a deputy.
