Published on January 8, 2020
The Kenya Railway Corporation (KRC) has embarked on a major upgrade project for the Nairobi railway, set to cost Ksh2.5 billion.
According to Phillip Mainga, acting Kenya Railway Managing Director, the upgrade will focus on a park and ride model, where commuters can leave their vehicles at designated stations and board a train to work.
The upgrade targets commuter lines from Nairobi Railway to Embakasi, Kikuyu, Ruiru, and Kahawa, with the aim of increasing the current 13,000 users to between 130,000 and 200,000 commuters.
Mr. Mainga noted that cabinet approval was the final hurdle to the project's implementation.
The upgrade is expected to alleviate the city's notorious traffic congestion by providing a reliable and efficient public transportation system.
