On January 8, 2020, Iran fired a volley of missiles at Iraqi bases housing US and other foreign troops, marking its first act in promised revenge for the US killing of a top Iranian general.

The missiles targeted the sprawling Ain al-Asad airbase in western Iraq and a base in Arbil, both housing American and other foreign troops deployed as part of a US-led coalition fighting the remnants of the Islamic State group.

Britain's Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, condemned the attack, urging Iran to pursue urgent de-escalation and not repeat 'reckless and dangerous attacks.'

Iran's supreme leader described the attack as a 'slap in the face' for the United States, but warned that revenge was yet to come.
