On January 5, 2020, police officers in Laikipia County's Kitengo village encountered Daniel Kamau Njoroge, who was found in possession of 200 milligrams of bhang.
Njoroge, who pleaded guilty to the charge, told the court that he was addicted to smoking bhang and that it was introduced to him by his late father when he was a child.
He claimed that he suffered severe headaches whenever he stopped using the drug, but the court was not swayed by his plea.
As a result, Njoroge was slapped with a Sh15,000 fine, which he will serve as a two-month jail term in default.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a 40-year-old woman named Grace Wanjaga was found in possession of 30 rolls of bhang at her home in Magutuni location on January 6, 2020.
Wanjaga, who pleaded guilty to the charge, told the court that she used the drug as a stress reliever, but the court was unmoved by her plea.
As a result, Wanjaga was ordered to pay a Sh50,000 fine or serve two years in jail.
She chose not to pay the fine and was taken to Meru GK prison to begin serving her sentence.
