On January 8, 2020, a Ukrainian plane carrying 176 passengers crashed near Imam Khomeini airport in Tehran, killing everyone on board.

The two black boxes from the Ukrainian airliner were found on the same day, according to Iranian state television.

However, Iran's aviation authority has stated that it will not hand over the recovered black boxes to the Americans or the manufacturer, Boeing.

"We will not give the black boxes to the manufacturer (Boeing) and the Americans," said Ali Abedzadeh, head of Iran's Civil Aviation Organisation, quoted by Mehr news agency.

According to Abedzadeh, it is the right of the country where air crashes occur to carry out the investigation, and Iran will lead the investigation with the Ukrainians present.

Under the rules of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, air crash investigations are led by the country where the accident occurred.

However, only a few countries, including Britain, France, Germany, and the United States, have the capability to analyse black boxes.
