Published on January 8, 2020, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has provided five lorries and personnel to aid families in Samburu County's Kirisia Forest who have decided to leave voluntarily.
The families had initially requested help from Cabinet Secretary for Forestry Keriako Tobiko during a tree planting campaign on December 30, 2019.
Over 10,000 families had encroached on the forest and offered to leave in December 2019, following a tree planting exercise that saw 11,000 seedlings planted.
Those who had not vacated the forest were given an additional 30 days to leave, with Kirisia Forest serving as a source of 10 rivers and four water towers in the region.
