Microsoft will discontinue support for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020, marking the end of a decade-long support period. This change means that users will no longer receive technical support, software updates, or security updates and fixes for the operating system.
According to Microsoft, 'after 10 years, support for Windows 7 is coming to an end on 14 January 2020.' The company warns that without continued software and security updates, Windows 7 users will be at greater risk for viruses and malware.
Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 10, which offers comprehensive end-to-end security features, including antivirus, firewall, and internet protections. This modern operating system provides more security features, dashboard displays, and ongoing updates to safeguard against future threats.
However, Windows 10 is not a cheap upgrade, with the Home Edition costing £119.99 and Windows 10 Pro costing £219.99. Microsoft also advises against installing Windows 10 on older devices, suggesting that customers with computers or laptops more than three years old should consider purchasing a new device.
As Microsoft notes, 'the best way to experience Windows 10 is on a new PC.' New modern PCs are fast, durable, and offer longer battery life, with the average price for a great PC being considerably less than it was 5-10 years ago.
