On January 7, 2020, Iran unleashed a wave of revenge on the US, launching over 12 missiles at two military bases in Iraq that hosted US troops.
The attack came just hours after the funeral of Qassem Soleimani, the top Iranian military commander who was killed in a US drone strike on January 3, 2020.
According to the Department of Defense, the missiles were fired on Tuesday evening, with the Pentagon confirming the attack but not revealing whether there were any casualties among US forces.
Assistant to the Secretary of Defence for Public Affairs Jonathan Hoffman released a statement, saying: 'Iran launched more than a dozen ballistic missiles against US military and coalition forces in Iraq. It is clear that the missiles were launched from Iran and targeted at least two Iraqi military bases hosting US military and coalition personnel at al-Assad and Irbil.'
US President Donald Trump tweeted that 'all is well' and that the US has 'one of the strongest militaries in the world', but the attack has raised concerns about the escalating tensions between the two countries.
