On January 8, 2020, a Boeing 737 passenger plane operated by Ukraine International Airlines crashed in Tehran, Iran, shortly after takeoff, killing all 167 passengers and nine crew members on board.
The plane, a Boeing 737-800, was en route to Kiev from Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport when it crashed into the ground, according to an Iranian Transport Ministry Spokesperson.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Oleksiy Honcharuk confirmed that there were no survivors in a statement released by the Ukrainian government.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known and could take months to determine, while the airline has yet to comment on the tragedy.
Interestingly, Iran, which is at war with the US over the killing of General Qasem Suleimani, will not give the black box of the airliner to Boeing, the manufacturer of the plane.
According to Reuters, the head of Tehran's civil aviation organization, Ali Abedzadeh, said it was not clear which country Iran would send the box to.
Ukraine International Airlines received the 737-800 plane in 2016, which stopped transmitting data two minutes into the flight, according to Flightradar24.
