This archive report was first published on 8 January 2020.

On January 7, 2020, lawyer Miguna Miguna boarded an Air France flight from Charles De Gaulle Airport to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), but was forced to disembark under unclear circumstances.

According to Miguna, Air France removed him from the flight, citing a red alert issued by the Kenyan government.

Earlier that day, Miguna had indicated that he had eventually caught a flight from Germany headed to JKIA, but was delayed due to the red alert.

Despite the government's assurance to facilitate his return, Miguna was barred from boarding a Lufthansa flight on January 6, 2020, citing a request from the Kenyan government.

Justice Weldon Korir had issued orders on January 6, 2020, compelling the government not to interfere with Miguna's re-entry and to release his Kenyan passport.

Miguna condemned the Kenyan administration for interfering with his process to get back to Nairobi, calling it a total violation of his rights.

“Air France removed me from Flight AF0814 from Charles De Gaulle Airport to JKIA, which was about to take off. [Expletive] Uhuru Kenyatta and [expletive] Raila Odinga are so afraid, cowardly, tyrannical and weak that they have sent RED ALERTS to all airlines. We shall never surrender!,” Miguna posted on social media.
