On January 6, 2020, a man tragically took his own life at Adlife Plaza, sparking reports that he had lost Ksh15 million in a casino. However, these claims have been disputed by the man's mother.
According to Richard Wangai's mother, a native of Kirinyaga County, her son had never even seen or handled Ksh1 million. She filed a report at the Kilimani Police Station, stating that Wangai looked after her farm in Kwale and was in Nairobi to visit family and friends for the End of Year festivities.
"We are yet to know with precision what resulted in Wangai's suicidal thoughts," said Kilimani OCPD Lucas Ogara, who added that Wangai's mother filed her statement early on Tuesday.
Topstar Casino at Adlife Plaza has also denied that Wangai was their client, with head of security Stephen Makari stating, "We are wondering why a section of the media have erroneously reported that the deceased committed suicide after he lost Sh15 million in a bet with us."
Further investigation revealed that Wangai never visited the casino located on the building's fifth floor, with Ogara confirming that CCTV footage showed him walking around the fourth floor, where there is no casino.
"Going by what we saw on CCTV, the man is seen walking around the fourth floor. There is no Casino on the fourth, but the fifth floor," Ogara said.
